Online Baccarat History

Though the exact origins of baccarat are still a mystery, it is one of the most commonly played online gambling games of all time. Understanding the stories behind the game may lead players to develop a deeper appreciation for the strategies and rules that dictate how it is played.

Etruscan Gods

In the Italian version of baccarat history, the game was originally played with tarot cards and linked to nine Etruscan gods and a blonde virgin. A nine-sided die was thrown and the numbers that appeared decided the virgin’s fate. If a five or lower was thrown, the virgin would be fated to walk into the sea and drown. If the dice showed a six or seven, the virgin would live a typical life. If an eight or nine were displayed, the virgin would become a respected priestess and live a rich and fulfilling life.

Baccarat in France

The origins of baccarat in France are unknown, but there is evidence to suggest it was being played in France during the end of the 15th century. It was originally legalized there in order to generate taxes to help support the poor. When Napoleon took power, however, gambling was again made illegal until a few centuries later. This clash in the legalization of baccarat eventually led to the development of one of the most well-known versions–Chemin de Fer.

Today’s Baccarat

After being deemed illegal by Napoleon, baccarat made its first appearance in England and gained notoriety among the rich and famous. In fact, the son of Queen Victoria once found himself in quite a financial bind due to losses accumulated while playing baccarat. Since then, the game travelled to South America and is thought to have made landfall in North America in New Orleans sometime during the 19th century.

Regardless of the origin story players choose to believe, baccarat is a game that is fun to play and exciting to win. There are many different variations from which players can choose, and each one presents a different set of rules for players to learn.
